Economic Development

The Local Option Municipal Economic Development Act (LB840, 1991) allows the City to collect and appropriate local tax dollars for economic development purposes.
The general strategy for the Economic Development Program is to build on the community's strength, to promote businesses and industry, and to retain and create employment for the community. The strategy is to maintain a good quality of life for our citizens, develop a strong workplace, develop our community's resources, attract new capital investment, broaden the community tax base and ensure economic stability for the City of Mitchell (the “City”).
Economic Development Grants and loans can be given out to local businesses for the following purposes:
  • Business recruitment activities
  • Incentives for job creation
  • Fixed assets and working capital
  • Public works improvements and location expansion
  • Purchase of real estate
  • Technical assistance, marketing, management counseling, or engineering assistance

The mayor, with the approval of the City Council, appoints the Economic Development Committee, which consists of five residents of the City. The members of the Economic Development Committee are:
Gary Martin
Lori Karpen
Sandra Hendren

After processing by the program administrator, the committee reviews economic development applications and makes recommendations to city council. The City Economic Development Policy, application, and plan can be found in the folder below.
